Algeria, Algiers Cost of Living April 2010


Country Climate: Arid to semiarid; mild, wet winters with hot, dry summers along coast; drier with cold winters and hot summers on high plateau; sirocco is a hot, dust/sand-laden wind especially common in summer.

Country Terrain: Mostly high plateau and desert; some mountains; narrow, discontinuous coastal plain.

Country Economy: The economy of Algeria is largely reliant on significant exports of petroleum and natural gas. The reserves are mostly in the Eastern Sahara; the Algerian government curbed the exports in the 1980s to slow depletion; exports increased again somewhat in the 1990s. Algeria trades most extensively with France and Italy, in terms of both imports and exports, but also trades with the United States and Spain.

Currency: Algerian Dinar (DZD).

Country Inflation: 4.5% (2008 est.) 4.6% (2009 est.).

City: Algiers is the capital and largest city of Algeria, and the second largest city in the Maghreb (after Casablanca).

City Economy: Algiers is an important economic, commercial and financial center, with in particular a stock exchange with a capitalisation of 60 billion euros. The port of Algiers is also the most important of North Africa.

Algiers has an overall cost of living index which equates it with low cost of living locations. The overall cost of living index is comprised of the prices for defined quantities of the same goods and services across all 13 Basket Groups. Algiers is currently ranked 192 overall, most expensive place in the world for expatriates to live, out of 282 international locations.
