Country Full Name: Turkmenistan.

Location: Turkmenistan is in Central Asia, bordering the Caspian Sea, between Iran and Kazakhstan.

Country Climate: Subtropical desert.

Country Terrain: Flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west.

Major Languages: Turkmen, Russian.

Major Religions: Islam.

Country Population: 5.3 million (2008 est.) 5.4 million (2009 est.).

Country Economy: Turkmenistan is largely desert country with nomadic cattle raising, intensive agriculture in irrigated oases, and huge gas and oil resources. One-half of its irrigated land is planted in cotton, placing the country in the top 10-15 producers. It also possesses the world's fifth largest reserves of natural gas and substantial oil resources.

Currency: Turkmen new manat (TMT).

Country Inflation: 14.5% (2008 est.) 0.45% (2009 est.).

City: Ashgabat is the capital and largest city of Turkmenistan.

City Economy: Ashgabat is primarily a government and administrative center. The principal industries are cotton textiles and metal working.
