Moving to Zagreb

Today we look at moving to Zagreb in Croatia from Shanghai in China. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.

In Zagreb people speak Croatian. In Shanghai people speak Mandarin Chinese.
Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Croatia. Shanghai is the largest city in China, and one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. Located on China's central eastern coast at the mouth of the Yangtze River, the city is administered as a municipality of the People's Republic of China with province-level status.

Zagreb's transport connections, concentration of industry, scientific and research institutions and industrial tradition underlie its leading economic position in Croatia. Shanghai is often regarded as the center of finance and trade in mainland China. Shanghai also hosts the largest share market in mainland China.

The overall cost of living rank in Zagreb is 58 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with high cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Shanghai to Zagreb will experience a change in cost of living of -10.9%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Zagreb is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% compared to Shanghai with a hardship index of 30% which is a high degree of hardship location.
