Moving to Frankfurt

Today we look at moving to Frankfurt in Germany from Lyon in France. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Frankfurt people speak German. In Lyon people speak French.

Frankfurt is the largest city in the German state of Hesse and the fifth-largest city in Germany. Lyon is in east-central France and is the second-largest metropolitan area in France.
Frankfurt is one of the leading financial centres in Europe. Lyon is a major industrial centre specializing in chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech industries. The city contains a significant software industry with a particular focus on video games, and in recent years has focussed on a growing local start-up sector.

The overall cost of living rank in Frankfurt is 39 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with high cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Lyon to Frankfurt will experience a change in cost of living of 8.7%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Frankfurt is ranked as a minimal hardship location with a hardship index of 10% the same as Lyon.
