Moving to Bangkok

Today we look at moving to Bangkok in Thailand from Colombo in Sri Lanka. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.

In Bangkok people speak Thai. In Colombo people speak Sinhala, Tamil and English.
Bangkok is the capital, largest urban area and primary city of Thailand. Colombo is the largest city and commercial capital of Sri Lanka. Bangkok is the economic center of Thailand, dominating the country's economy. The great majority of Sri Lankan corporations have their head offices in Colombo. Some of the industries include chemicals, textiles, glass, cement, leather goods, furniture, and jewellery. In the city centre is located South Asia's second tallest building - The World Trade Centre.

The overall cost of living rank in Bangkok is 173 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Colombo to Bangkok will experience a change in cost of living of 1.7%.

In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Bangkok is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% the same as Colombo.
