Moving to Freetown

Today we look at moving to Freetown in Sierra Leone from Basseterre in Saint Kitts and Nevis. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.
In Freetown people speak English, Krio (Creole language derived from English) and a range of African languages. In Basseterre people speak English.

Freetown is the capital and largest city of Sierra Leone. Basseterre is the capital of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Freetown is the economic, financial, and cultural center of Sierra Leone. The city of Basseterre has established itself as a financial centre in the Eastern Caribbean.

The overall cost of living rank in Freetown is 128 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Basseterre to Freetown will experience a change in cost of living of 18.7%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Freetown is ranked as an extreme hardship location with a hardship index of 40% compared to Basseterre with a hardship index of 20% which is a some hardship location.
