Moving to Lusaka

Today we look at moving to Lusaka in Zambia from Seattle in USA. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.

In Lusaka people speak English (official), Bemba, Lozi, Nyanja and Tonga. In Seattle people speak English.
Lusaka is the capital and largest city of Zambia. Seattle is the Northernmost major city on the West Coast of the United States. Lusaka is a commercial centre as well as centre of government, and the four main highways of Zambia radiate north, south, east and west from it. The major economic, cultural and educational center in the region, Seattle is the center of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area, the 15th largest in the United States, and the largest in the northwestern United States.

The overall cost of living rank in Lusaka is 135 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with middle cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Seattle to Lusaka will experience a change in cost of living of 6.9%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Lusaka is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% compared to Seattle with a hardship index of 10% which is a minimal hardship location.
