Moving to Port Vila

Today we look at moving to Port Vila in Vanuatu from Pittsburgh in USA. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.

In Port Vila people speak Bislama, French and English. In Pittsburgh people speak English.
Port Vila is the capital and largest city of Vanuatu. Pittsburgh is the second largest city in the state of Pennsylvania and is the county seat of Allegheny County. Port Vila is the economic and commercial centre of Vanuatu. Port Vila is Vanuatu's most important harbour and the centre of the country's trade. The international airport, Bauerfield International (VLI) is also located in the city. Major industries in the city remain agriculture and fishing. Tourism is also becoming important, especially from Australia and New Zealand. Pittsburgh is historically known for its steel industry, today its economy is largely based on healthcare, education, technology, robotics, and financial services.

The overall cost of living rank in Port Vila is 27 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with high cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from Pittsburgh to Port Vila will experience a change in cost of living of 51.6%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Port Vila is ranked as a high degree of hardship location with a hardship index of 30% compared to Pittsburgh with a hardship index of 10% which is a minimal hardship location.
