Moving to Sanaa

Today we look at moving to Sanaa in Yemen from San Jose in USA. We highlight cost of living and other major differences likely to be experienced in our series of short blogs on moving between different international locations.

In Sanaa people speak Arabic. In San Jose people speak English.
Sanaa is the capital and largest city of Yemen. San Jose is the third-largest city in California and the tenth-largest in the United States. Sanaa International Airport is Yemen's main domestic and international airport. Al Madina, a commercial area of the old city, is where development is proceeding rapidly. The large concentration of high-technology engineering, computer, and microprocessor companies around San Jose has led the area to be known as Silicon Valley. As the largest city in the valley, San Jose has billed itself the capital of Silicon Valley.

The overall cost of living rank in Sanaa is 298 out of 300 global locations, which equates it with low cost of living locations.  An expatriate moving from San Jose to Sanaa will experience a change in cost of living of -40.6%.
In terms of the hardship people are likely to experience, assessed in global terms, Sanaa is ranked as an extreme hardship location with a hardship index of 40% compared to San Jose with a hardship index of 10% which is a minimal hardship location.
